WHAT IS COMBUSTIBLE DUST?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) s defines combustible dust as "a solid material composed of distinct particles or pieces, regardless of size, shape, or chemical composition, which presents a fire or deflagration hazard when suspended in air or some other oxidizing medium over a range of concentrations". Many manufacturing industries create large amounts of Combustible Dust that have the potential to become highly explosive and cause fatalities and immense damage. Over time, dust and debris collect on overhead ductwork, fixtures, pipes, etc. This dust builds and becomes airborne from vibrations causing contamination of products and production equipment as well as contributing to poor indoor air quality. The build up of this dust and debris can pose hazardous conditions - Combustible Dust.

The contaminants that infiltrate your ductwork will build up over time. As air passes through your ductwork it is circulating those containments throughout all areas of your home. In fact, air circulates throughout your home up to 5 to 7 times per hour, which means those same containments composed of dust, mold, dirt, construction debris, bacteria, dust mites, soot, nicotine, pet dander and debris are being transported are circulated too.

Additionally, the build up of containments in your ductwork restricts air flow causing your HVAC system to work harder and shortening its life span.

WHAT INDUSTRIES ARE AT RISK FOR COMBUSTIBLE DUST?

Our Cleaning Process

Hygienic Air service technicians are trained and experienced in using our specialized equipment to safely remove combustible dust. Hygienic Air uses high powered HEPA vacuums that filter the air preventing contaminants from becoming airborne. Utilizing the proper equipment for contact vacuuming is extremely important in order to ensure the combustible dust does not become airborne.

Dust layer thickness

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends immediate cleaning if a dust layer of 1/32-inch thick accumulates on at least 5% of a surface area. However, if the dust is lighter and fluffier, the standard is an 1/8- inch.
